Northpark Drive overpass: what Kingwood's biggest road project means for homeowners
Quick answer. The Northpark Drive overpass is turning Kingwood's busiest entrance into a six-lane divided road that rises over the railroad tracks and Loop 494. For homeowners, that means fewer train delays, a faster run to Hwy. 59, and a stronger case for the neighborhoods that depend on Northpark.

What is being built?
The project widens Northpark Drive into a six-lane divided roadway between Hwy. 59 and Russell Palmer Road and carries it over the Union Pacific tracks and Loop 494 on a new overpass. Community Impact reports the price tag at $76.8 million, with work that began in April 2023 and was expected to wrap up in the fourth quarter of 2026.
Who is paying for it?
The City of Houston and the Lake Houston Redevelopment Authority, which manages Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone No. 10, fund the work. Harper Brothers Construction is the contractor.
Is there more coming after the overpass?
Yes. A second, separate project will rebuild Northpark Drive as a six-lane divided road from Russell Palmer Road east to Woodland Hills Drive, including a pedestrian underpass near Glade Valley Drive. Community Impact puts that project at $72.7 million, with construction expected to start in October 2028 and finish in 2030.
Why does this matter if you own a home in Kingwood?
Northpark is the front door for a large share of Kingwood. Anyone who has sat at the tracks waiting on a freight train knows how much that crossing shapes the daily drive. Taking traffic over the rail line removes that wait, and a wider road should ease the morning and evening backup to Hwy. 59.
Buyers weigh the commute as heavily as the house. When getting in and out of a neighborhood gets easier, the homes behind that road become easier to sell. The same corridor is also filling in with new retail and dining, which adds to the convenience buyers are paying for.
What should buyers and sellers do now?
If you are selling, mention the improved access in your listing once the overpass is open, and time showings so buyers see the finished road rather than the construction. If you are buying, expect some lane shifts and detours near Northpark while work continues, and check the Lake Houston Redevelopment Authority site for current traffic changes before you plan showings.
