Relocating to Houston: how to choose an area before you choose a house
Quick answer. Start with where you will work and how you want to live, then narrow to two or three areas. In Houston, commute direction, school district, flood history and tax rate vary more between areas than house prices do.

Where should I start?
Start with the workplace. Houston is large and spread out, so the side of town you work on should guide where you look. Drive the route at rush hour before you commit to an area.
How do school districts work here?
The Houston area has many independent school districts, and district lines do not follow city names. A mailing address will not tell you the district, so verify by address with the district itself.
Why do taxes differ so much?
Texas has no state income tax and relies on property taxes. Rates differ by city, district and utility district, so two similar homes can carry different payments.
New construction or resale?
North Houston has a lot of both. New homes offer warranties and current floor plans. Established neighborhoods offer mature trees, larger lots and settled surroundings.
Can I do this from out of state?
Yes. I work with relocating families by phone and video, narrow the areas with you, and plan a focused visit. Ask me for my 2026 Houston New Construction and Neighborhood Guide.
