Texas homestead exemption: what new homeowners should do
Quick answer. If you own and live in your Texas home as your primary residence, file a homestead exemption with your county appraisal district. It lowers your taxable value and limits how fast that value can rise. Filing is free.

What does the homestead exemption do?
It reduces the taxable value of your primary residence for school taxes and, in many places, for other taxing units. It also caps how much the appraised value of your homestead can increase each year.
How do I file?
File the application with the appraisal district for the county where the home is located, such as Harris Central Appraisal District or Montgomery Central Appraisal District. You will need a Texas driver license or ID showing the property address.
When can I file?
You can apply once you own and occupy the home. You do not need to wait for the next tax year.
Do I need to pay someone to file?
No. Filing directly with the appraisal district is free. Ignore mailers that charge a fee.
Does it carry over if I move?
No. The exemption belongs to a specific home, so file again when you buy your next primary residence.
