Buying from out of town, step by step

  1. Talk for 15 minutes. Tell Michael your timing, budget, commute and must-haves. You get a short list of areas worth your time.
  2. Get preapproved with a local lender. It makes a short house-hunting trip workable. You can choose any lender.
  3. Research the addresses, not just the area. Taxes, MUDs, flood history and HOA rules change street by street. The guide shows where to look.
  4. Plan one focused trip. See the short list in person, drive your commute at the hour you would travel, then write an offer with an option period for inspections.
